Propagation of Cryogenic Thermal Fractures from Unconfined PMMA Boreholes

چکیده
In cryogenic fracturing, a rock surface exposed to fluids undergoes large thermal gradient, and the resultant local tensile stress overcomes strength initiates fractures. This study investigates development of cracks generated from treatment borehole under no external confining on specimens. The experiments were performed transparent PMMA specimens observe fracture proliferation around boreholes. Liquid nitrogen was flowed through boreholes cool surface. results show that initial growth is characterized by abrupt starts stops, as propagates outward, appears more continuous. an early stage, horizontal/radial fractures vertical are defining patterns. Horizontal tend be separated specific exclusion distance (i.e., spacing between cracks). While distinct horizontal/vertical manifest themselves at resulting interactions curvatures can develop into complex shapes later stages. Cryogenic loading induces distinctively curved tendency curvature may prevent greater penetration. An increase in pressure during liquid flow, however, lessen tortuosity facilitate radial propagation. A high flow rate also advantageous they accelerate cooling

Thermal instability of the fluid column in boreholes
For better understanding of temperature state in the shallow subsurface, temperature-depth logs can be completed by high-resolution long-run temperature-time monitoring(s) at selected depth(s). Observational evidence proved that even when a borehole is in relatively “fully” stabilized conditions, temperature data may exhibit certain unrest resembling irregular oscillations in the order of thous...
متن کاملThermal Conductivity of Cryogenic Deuterium (LLE version)
Accurate values of the thermal conductivity and specific heat of deuterium are necessary to make high quality cryogenic laser fusion targets. Due to the difficulty of measuring these values at cryogenic temperatures, the “3ω” method is used. This involves passing an oscillating current through a platinum wire embedded in deuterium and measuring the third-harmonic voltage that results from the t...
متن کاملSecondary Shear Waves from Source Boreholes
The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the most important results of the thesis work of Meredith (1990) concerning radiation from seismic sources in boreholes. Previous studies of radiation from sources in boreholes have been far-field studies and have neglected the explicit contribution of the borehole. In general, this is fine for P-wave radiation and for S-wave radiation into high veloci...
متن کاملThermal lensing in cryogenic sapphire substrates
We report the reduction of the thermal lensing in cryogenic sapphire mirrors, which is planed to be used in the Large scale Cryogenic Gravitational wave Telescope (LCGT) project. We measured three key parameters of sapphire substrate for thermal lensing at cryogenic temperature. They are optical absorption coefficient, thermal conductivity and temperature coefficient of refractive index at cryo...
متن کاملThermal turbulence in cryogenic helium gas
Several recent experiments have utilized cryogenic helium gas in order to generate high levels of thermal turbulence within a layer of gas heated from below. As the principal control parameter for the fluid turbulence depends strongly on the layer height, this has typically been made as large as feasible, while the lateral dimensions have been kept of the same dimension or smaller for practical...
